Iowa’s 15th-ranked 2018, Johnson has a very busy month ahead of him, and will attend several invite-only D1 elite camps.
“I’m going to go to a lot of camps this summer. I’ll be at Penn in a couple weeks, and then I’ll go to Illinois State and UNI, and those will be a lot of fun,” said Johnson, who also mentioned he’ll be attending Central Michigan and Drake elite camps.
“I’ve gotten some more letters from different schools too; South Dakota has sent me a letter and several more.”
With some of the best hops in the state, and some very decent height to go with it, Johnson has always been a threat to snare boards and alter shots from the wing spot. But he’s done a nice job of blossoming into a more skilled wing, who can handle the ball, and shoot from deep.
“I’ve really been working on my shot, and getting to the hoop and finishing at the hoop. I’ve been working on getting open looks at shots and a pull-up jump-shot too — just my all-around game kind of,” said Johnson.
“I definitely see myself developing into a three more, and working on my outside game, and making most of my plays from out there.”
Last season while coming off the bench as a sophomore for Waukee, Johnson averaged 3.5 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. And if last weekend’s Urbandale Shoot Out was any indicator — where Johnson took home First-Team All-Tournament honors — he will have a much-increased role next season as a junior.
“I definitely will be looking to be a threat offensively, and I’ve been working on defense and will be looking to improve that. I’ll be starting at the four, and I’ll be getting some time at the three and the five too. So I should be able to take advantage of a lot of mismatches,” said Johnson, who will be playing with Kingdom Hoops Elite 16U during the upcoming July live periods.
“We’ve made a lot of improvements both defensively and offensively. We’re playing more together as a team now, and we’re just trying to get better every practice and improve all of our games as all-around players.”
