He’s smaller than most other point guards in the class, but his vision and ability to find the open man — particularly in transition — are among the best in the state.
Some colleges have already taken notice of the true point guard.
“Just (last week) me and some guys had a workout with Nebraska-Kearney at the Iowa Fire facility. And I’ve gotten letters from Briar Cliff, Luther, Central Michigan, just some stuff like that,” said Balderas, who later mentioned Central Missouri, Holy Cross, and William Penn had shown interest.
“I hope everything falls into place this summer and my name gets out there. I’m going to play as hard as I can and hopefully I’ll see some more mail.”
His improvement was striking last weekend in Des Moines, maybe becasue he and his teammates have the benefit of having their own private gym (South Hamilton head coach Nathan Hill has a gym) at their disposal.
“Our coach has his own gym, so I’ve really been working on my 3-point shot to get it better. And my vision is something I’ve always had I just never really was able to show it; so I’ve been working on that. Stronger passes help, I’ve been getting in the weight room a lot.”
During the spring Balderas played with Charles Young and the Iowa Wolves 16U team. This summer he will play with a lot of those same guys, but on Pure Prep – they will be playing in Las Vegas and Indiana.
“I’m going to keep working on my 3-point jumper, I’m trying to get that down the best I can. And I’m going to continue getting my ball-handling better and getting in the weight room,” said Balderas.
“I just want to get my name out there and play the best I can, and hopefully get some more college letters.”
