“We’re really starting to come together,” Vaske told PHI. “I think toward the beginning of the year it was kind of tough because we hadn’t played with each other but I think toward the summer we’ll have a shot at winning some tournaments. We’ve got good players.
“At first it was kind of tough, meeting a bunch of new people and leaving Barnstormers – they’re such a good team and program – but the coaches, (director) Hank (Huddleson) are really cool. It’s been pretty smooth.”
Vaske, who averaged 19 points on 47.5 percent shooting overall and 36.5 percent from 3 last year, has the added challenge of learning his new teammates’ tendencies and preferences as a point guard.
“If you’re the point guard,” Vaske said, “you’ve just got to know what a player like it’s to do, whether they like to shoot it, drive or pass. It can be tough.”
The transition has been easy enough, though, that Vaske continues to garner Division I interest heading into the July before his junior year.
“Columbia recently talked to me and said they’re going to be watching me a lot,” the 6-foot Vaske said. “They said they’d be calling me June 15th (first day colleges can call 2018 prospects). I’m going to Drake elite camp (Monday). They’ve contacted me and came to a couple of my AAU games, couple of high school games. Same thing with (Northern Iowa). I’m going to their elite camp and they’ve come to a couple games.”
The Martin Brothers will spend the July eval periods playing at NY2LA (Milwaukee), AAU Nationals (Orlando) and AAU Super Showcase (Orlando).
“’I’m just trying to get my name out there more,” Vaske said, “and just trying to get colleges to know who I am. Trying to get my first scholarship offer this summer. That’s a big goal of mine.”
He’ll also be spending the summer trying to refine aspects of his game.
“Just making sure my three-point shot is more consistent,” Vaske, our seventh ranked player in 2018, said, “and getting more of a mid-range game and also my ballhandling, got to get that tighter.”
