The good-sized shooting guard has heard nothing yet from college coaches, expect that to change in the very near future.
“I haven’t really heard from anybody so far,” said Appel, Iowa’s 29th-ranked 2018.
“I don’t know if I’ve completely fallen under the radar. When I’ve played some this spring I’ve been more of a guy to pass the ball off and shoot when I’m open. So I’m playing with some other teams, and I think if we pick up some more wins and I become more of a scorer, then I think it may start to come around.”
He added: “I really just want to play D1 basketball and get my college paid for. That’s the goal.”
His great height makes him versatile, and his shooting is what makes him most dangerous. He explained his playing style to PHI.
“I’d say I’m a shooter that can drive and post-up when needed. I’m really working on my defense on my right side, I think that will help me become a better all-around player,” said Appel, who assessed his play during his sophomore season with the Bobcats.
“It was pretty much just a learning year with our two seniors, they were our go-to people and I was just kind of the third guy. Next year I’m going to be the main scorer, and my coach really wants me to be our leader – and that’s what I’ve been working on.”
His primary grassroots team is Iowa Wolves this offseason. But he’s also played with Iowa Dynasty, and he’ll play with Pure Prep 17U during the July live periods.
“I think I’ve shot the ball very well this spring, and I became more of a leader,” said Appel. “And I want to carry it on through the summer.”
