By now you have probably heard of Josh Nickelberry, he began his varsity career starting as an 8th grader at Northwood Temple and continued his stellar play throughout the following summer and right through his freshman year. During his freshman season he came up with quite a few big scoring games and would go on to be named the Basketball Elite Cumberland County Freshman of the year. Although he is very young in age he clearly has the talent and maturity of a player much older than him as he does not get rattled and doesn’t back down from any challenge.
What makes him special?
The attributes that have impressed me the most over these past few season about this young man have been his scoring ability , and his on court demeanor. He is a knock down shooter that can make perimeter shots off the bounce as well as catch and shoot situations. Also he has the ability to get into the paint and has added athleticism over the past year to the point now that he is finishing plays above the rim with ease. Another attribute is his on-court demeanor, he never seems like he’s rattled no matter what is going and he doesn’t allow defenders to speed up his game, unlike many young players. Lastly his competiveness is an attribute that I absolutely love, when it is time to match up with the top players across the country he seems to look forward to these games and not shy away. One game that stands out in particular is a game during the Super Sophomore Camp where he went for 40 Points, 8 Rebounds & 6 Assist against some of the top sophomores in the country. Many people have Wendell Moore as the no brainer #1 player in the class of 2019 for NC but Josh Nickelberry is definitely in the conversation for best in the class and I will not be surprised to see him nationally ranked before much longer.
