Continue ReadingChampionship caliber rosters include players who are willing to sacrifice personal recognition for the greater good of the team. Some players are offended at the proposal. Other players get “it.” John Faller (2018), a 2018 prospect from the Wellington School in Columbus, is one of those players who understands.
Interest from Findlay and an unnamed school in Fort Wayne is the current extent of his recruitment process. However, the 6’3” wing will surely make a winning program proud once they bring him on campus.
Going into his junior year, he’s also considerably young as a player. He’s certainly in the window where a ton of high school players make that jump.
In June, Faller will be playing in camps at Akron and Wittenberg with Wellington. Then, in July, he’s back at it with 270 Hoops Select to finish up the grassroots season.
“In July, we’re going to Philadelphia and Cincinnati so far. We’re trying to pick up one more tournament, we just don’t know quite when and where yet,” Faller said.
“Some tournaments I’ve played, like, very very strong. And then other tournaments, it’s hard for me to show up … I’m trying really hard this off-season to work on my mental aspect.”
Faller credits his support system in helping him along any mental barriers that may exist. A support system which truly has plenty to believe in.
He brings a unique mixture of being comfortable with his back-to-the-basket along with a sweet stroke from behind the arch.
Faller is able to make defenders uncomfortable when they switch on him, then exploits those vulnerabilities. Basically, using his strength against smaller guards and stretching teams with the three ball when they put a post player on him. Again, filling needs.
“I like to do what other people don’t really focus on … Whether that’s scoring points one game or grabbing ten rebounds another … Diving on the floor for a loose ball, or just creating offense,” Faller said of his versatile game.
“When I first starting playing basketball … I was the five. So I was used to having my back to the board and stuff, so I know some post moves. Then I starting growing into my weight and stuff, and I was a knock-down shooter.”
Faller, who plays alongside his twin brother Bob Faller, will continue building confidence and the rest will take care of itself. Finding a college program that believes in him should be the final piece to that puzzle, and Prep Hoops Ohio would be shocked if any number of college teams wouldn’t welcome a guy who is willing and able to be the gadget player.
