He was a role player off the bench last season, but looks to have a more prominent role next season as a senior. In the meantime he’s playing with a surprisingly good All Iowa Attack Black squad, and hopes some recruitment will start-up for his this summer.
“I have not seen any recruitment yet,” said Lathrum, who plays football and basketball for the Maroons. “I would love to play any sport in college, but it’d be cool to see some recruitment for basketball – I like basketball a lot more.”
A bruising power forward with nice touch and an ability to score creatively around the rim, Lathrum says he’s working to improve his mid-range to perimeter game the rest of his 17U offseason.
“I like going down low, and I like the sky-hook. Also I’m working on my jump-shot a lot, and my 3-ball is coming along nicely this offseason,” he said.
“I’m going to continue and work on my ball-handling and my shooting, I need to get my form down. But mainly ball-handling though.”
Last winter as a junior with a very talented Maroons squad, Lathrum averaged 1.6 points and 1.8 rebounds per game.
“My role was to watch the class ahead of us and help them prepare for the games. I was a bench player, but I had a lot of fun doing it,” said Lathrum, who is eager for his senior season.
“I’m just going to give max effort and hope to get as many minutes as I can. If I start, I start, and if I don’t start I’m just going to come off the bench and give it my all.”
For the rest of his spring and summer the bruising forward will continue to be a key player for the All Iowa Attack Black 17U, one of the best 17U teams in the state so far this spring.
Good enough that they’ve beaten All Iowa Attack Red — the program’s first unit — twice in two tries this spring.
“We just want it a lot more, we know they are supposedly better than us so we just want to beat them and show that we’re an actual team that can win games,” said Lathrum.
“This is our second year together so we have the chemistry down, and it’s just been a fun year so far.”
