Continue ReadingChandler Owenby will be counted on pretty heavily next season with St. Paul’s after coming off the bench. His skillset, athleticism, and approach to the game at 6’8 is always fun to watch. There is no backing down against older players despite the slim frame. With his production thus far, colleges have already begun taking note and he’s taken a couple unofficial visits.
“Running the court and playing defense is where I’m most effective.” He’s got the ability to beat bigs and some guards down the court and the athleticism to finish above the rim. On defense he can handle larger players with his footwork and has no problem defending the pick and roll in a variety of ways. In a half court setting, he can space the floor to the short corner consistently and his ever improving range even extended beyond the three point line this year.
With the summer here and extended time to work on his game, he told us he’s “been working on improving [his] outside shot.” As the ability to knock down shots beyond the arc becomes more consistent, his potential as a stretch four that has the athleticism to finish grows. “This summer, I have been working on my strength training and ball handling.” The added strength and improved ball handling will make him even more of a threat from different areas on the court.
St. Paul had one of the best records in the state but came up short to East Ascension in the second round of the LHSAA 5A state playoffs. With a vast majority of the production returning, they’ll be looking to play even faster and make a deeper run in the playoffs. He’s still got two years before college but had this to say, “Playing at the next level would give me the chance to get a college degree and to continue to playing basketball at a high competitive level, which is what I love doing.”
Chandler Owenby has a 3.2 GPA and has yet to take the ACT. He’s heard from Rice, Pepperdine, St Mary’s, Southeastern, and Richmond and taken a few unofficial visits as well while traveling for summer ball with Texas Elite. At 6’8 and the ability to play inside or out on the offensive end, Owenby is an intriguing prospect in the class of 2018.
