The 6-foot-7 up-and-comer says it was a family decision, and though his older brother Trent will remain at Norwalk, Cade thinks better opportunities lie in the CIML.
“It’s a family decision that we made. My dad and I will be living in the Roosevelt district, we rented a place. I think Roosevelt is a good opportunity for me. They don’t have a whole lot of size, so there’s a good opportunity here for me to make a difference on the team,” said Moritz, who says he and his new head coach Charles Zanders have discussed expectations.
“He has a lot of expectations of me. We think we’re going to be a very good team this year, and be competitive. I’m the biggest player on the team, so my job will be to score inside and rebound, and to hold down the paint on offense and defense.”
Moritz was sensational last weekend at the Grand View Team Camp, earning first-team all tournament honors and leading his Riders to a 4-1 record.
“I’ve worked on being able to go up strong, and I’ve focused on lifting a lot more this summer so I can be strong and take it to the hole and take the contact,” said Moritz. “I’ve been working a lot on shooting and ball-handling so I can stretch the defense, and be able to go inside and outside to score.”
What was most impressive about Moritz last weekend was his versatility defensively, he even got a five-second call on a guard
“I’ve definitely been working on my quickness. And I definitely want to play at the next level. I’m probably not going to be guarding 7-footers who outweigh me, so being able to guard multiple positions is something I’m going to need to be able to do.”
Though he’s played with Iowa Wolves the past two summers, that team has been adopted by Pure Prep. And several of the Wolves — including Moritz — will play with Pure Prep this summer.
“I’d like to get stronger this summer, I think that’s a big key for me if I want to play at the next level. And then continue to work on my shooting and ball-handling, and become more of a stretch-four or three – it’s my goal to play that position at the next level,” said Moritz, who seems on the verge of seeing his recruitment spike.
“I haven’t gotten a whole lot of contact yet. After we played a tournament in Chicago, I had a really good weekend there, and there were some schools that were starting to have their eye on me. But nobody has really contacted me yet.”
He added: “I definitely want to start getting some people to look at me so I can play at the next level. And I think this is a good summer to get people to start noticing me.”
