Currently the 6-foot-2 Mount Vernon and Iowa Barnstormer guard has one NAIA offer from Clarke. And if last weekend was any indicator, several more offers will come his way in the coming months.
Ash mentioned Morningside, Grand View, Coe, and Luther have all been in contact with him so far. And he has been on campus at Clarke once.
“I like it a lot there (Clarke). And I really like the coaches a lot there. We had a tournament there and I saw the campus a little bit, and I think I’ll head back up this fall for another visit,” said Ash, who says recruitment is a priority for him right now.
“I’m not stressing it too much. I’m just going to keep playing basketball, and play as a team and not become selfish. It’d be nice to be seen by some other coaches, and it is a big deal for me.”
The sharpshooter has grown a bit in the past six months. And he’s always been a fantastic shooter, certainly able to be classified as one of the best deep threats in Iowa.
He is though working to diversity his skill-set.
“I’ve just been working on getting stronger and being able to finish at the rim more. Not just being a 3-point shooter like I was before, but trying to get to the rim a lot more and get to the free-throw line a lot more,” said Ash who was being shaded by opponents more often than not last weekend in Des Moines.
“I’m really going to have to set myself to get open off of screens, work my man and come off of it,” he said. “I’m just working to come off screens; double screens, triple screens, ball screens, everything, and just finding a way to get to the rim.”
A staple with the Iowa Barnstormers, Ash has been starting with the 17U squad plenty this offseason, and says leadership and shooting have been his roles.
“I thought I played pretty well this spring. I shot really well,” he said. “We’ve had some guys gone, so I’ve had to step up and I’ve been starting some games. I’ve been more of a scorer and a leader for this team.”
Ash added: “We just want to keep improving as a team this summer and try and get in the platinum bracket on Sunday, and play in front of as many coaches as we possibly can. We just want to try and impress some coaches, and try and get some new schools in contact.”
