As the famous saying goes, you can teach a lot of things in the game of basketball but you cannot teach height, with that being said I highly recommend that NCAA D3, D2 and NAIA schools put South View High School in Hope Mills, NC to check out Vernon McWhite over the next few months and the next season. Vernon is a 6’6 Class of 2017 forward who at the time is somewhat raw but definitely has the tools to be a very solid if he puts in the work on the court and inside the weight room.
During this summer, Mcwhite has been playing on the Adidas Circuit in the Silver Bracket with Team Wall 16u. His numbers over the summer may not jump out at you, but his potential should. Vernon already possesses a decent midrange/short corner jump shot that he uses rather often as well as a long wingspan that helps him come up with some blocked shots and deflections. Another aspect of his game that coaches will love is his motor, whether he diving for a loose ball or taking a charge, he plays the game with energy, which you have to love to get from your big man. Once he becomes more comfortable playing inside and with his back to the basket, his production will increase as the game will become much easier for him. Throughout the high school season he had some games on occasion where he showed what he could potentially be, such as pulling down 17 Rebounds in a game vs Pine Forest HS or coming up with a double/double of 13 Points and 11 Rebounds against Grays Creek HS. There is clearly potential in this young man, he was very respectful when we spoke and seems like as if he has the desire to be good.
2015-2016 High School Stats: 5.6 points, 7.5 Rebounds per game, 1.6 Blocks
Quote from Vernon’s H.S Coach Wendell Wise: ” As a player Vernon has more potential than any other player I have coached and on top of that he’s humble, a great teammate, and a great person. His ceiling is high and he’s constantly getting better and better. He is one of those players that coaches love to be around, he doesn’t complain or whine and does what he is asked. The future is bright for this young man.
