He was given the opportunity at a young age to meet some of the most influential people and talented players in the basketball community of Charlotte, N.Car. Some of those interactions with top players and coaches have rubbed off on the younger Wertz, along with hard work. He is ranked number seven in PrepHoops 2018 rankings for North Carolina. https://prephoops.com/north-carolina/rankings/prospect-rankings/2018-rankings/
More of a natural shooting guard Wertz can also take over the point guard position. A talented three-points shooter, a high basketball IQ, ability to make the right pass are going to what college coaches’ notice first with Trey. Also throw in a 6’9″ wingspan that allows Wertz to disrupt passing lanes and we see why high major programs are showing interest.
Trey and his Providence Day teammate Devon Dotson (ranked 3rd in NC) are the two highest ranked teammates in our rankings. “Devon and I are good friends on and off the court. I think we can have a really good back court right now that can only get better.”
Fresh off a NCISAA 3-A state championship at Providence Day, in which the six-foot-four and 1/2 sophomore guard finished with 25 points, six rebounds and six assists in the championship game against High Point Christian and Kentucky freshman Bam Adebayo. Providence Day will lose a lot of size in post players Grant Williams (Tennessee), Isaac Johnson (Appalachian State) and Josh Howard (Brown) to college next season. “I think it will definitely be different, but I think we can use it to our advantage to some degree (smaller lineup). “We can get up and down a little more and maybe make some other adjustments. Playing the schedule we play, we are going to see some 6’10” guys and taller so all five on the floor for us will have to rebound.”
Trey has been playing this spring and summer with a talented Team Loaded North Carolina. “It’s been pretty good. We had a feeling out process at first but we started to come together at the end of April and really rolled through May. I really want to win Adidas Finals and Adidas Super 64 in Vegas.”
Richmond was the first to offer Trey back in October of 2015. He has since added offers from Charlotte, LaSalle, Rice and an offer from Clemson in June. “It was very exciting getting (Clemson offer) . As a kid I have always dreamed of getting an ACC offer and to get it before my junior campaign is just a blessing.”
