He then spent a few years traveling the world with the Harlem Globetrotters. He is now the varsity women’s coach at Asheville Christian Academy in Swannanoa, N.Car. During the off season he runs John Williams Basketball Elite Training and coaches Team Carolina, an AAU team based in Western North Carolina for high school aged kids. I had the opportunity to watch a few workouts and practices a few weeks ago. What Williams is doing is something that this area has needed for a long time. I was impressed at the talent level I saw and the work these kids have put into learning from a former professional basketball player. Below is a list of a few players that caught my eye that are currently at the Division Two level in terms of recruitment.
Nick Tolbert (2018 guard) A strong pass first PG, great at attacking the lane, and can knock down shots past the three-point line. An All-Mac selection from Asheville HS, the rising junior averaged 12 points per game this past season.
Kaedin Robinson (2018 guard) A rising junior at Reynolds HS who can blow by his defender. Has a shifty with his crossover and a solid defender who can keep his man in front of him.
Ben Craig (2018 guard) Craig has a gym rat approach to the game. A tough as nails guard who always puts the ball in the right place. A solid shooter from outside and a lock-down defender.
DAngelo Elliot (2018 guard) Another Asheville HS product, Elliot plays with a high basketball IQ that has a good understanding of the game. Has a college ready build and can score from all levels of the floor.
Caleb Mills (2019 guard) Mills is a rising sophomore at Carolina Day School. Long and active at 6’1, gets his hands in the passing lanes, can finish at the rim and is a natural scorer.
Ethan Heffner (2020 guard) The freshman at Asheville Christian has a chance to be a good one. Runs the floor well, will probably top put at around 6’5. High basketball IQ, good stroke all the way to three-point line.
