We don’t often write about the same player twice in two days, but Moritz was that dominant this weekend for his new team. Moritz has been playing with the Iowa Wolves and Norwalk Warriors the past two seasons, and we’ve never seen him dominate like this. He looks more confident and aggressive then he ever has, and could be a 15 point and 10 rebound per game guy next season for Roosevelt.
2018 Trey Drummond, Ballard (6’1 G)
This was one of the biggest surprises of the day. When a kid you’ve never seen before goes-off for 17 second half points in a game, you inquire. I did just that, and it turns out he may be the starting point guard for a very good Bombers team next season. He’s got a nice build with some decent height, handles the ball well, and can hit the long ball. Drummond also has some blow-by ability and looks to setup teammates. Once he fine tunes all those areas of his game, he’ll be a great player.
2017 Tyler Ihle, Ballard (6’2 SG)
This sharpshooting lefty was tremendous today. He’s got a pure stroke from deep, and has some handles to boot. He’ll be a standout player on ab team that could make some noise next season in 3A.
2017 Max Stoltz, Ballard (6’1 SG)
Like Ihle, Stoltz is a sharpshooting off-guard who can handle the ball adequately. He shot 48.4 percent from deep last season, and has proven this offseason — with Attack Black and Ballard — that he is one of the best shooters in Iowa. He and Ihle will make a ton of 3s next season and are certainly one of the best shooting duos in the state.
2018 Steve Borneman, DC-G (6’2 G)
He’s a guard, but he’s not drinking all the 3-ball Kool-Aid. He’s going to beat you by getting his shots off as close to the rim as he can, and has the 7-foot running floater on lock. Borneman has some nice length, and uses it well to be disruptive defensively. And just because he doesn’t shoot a ton of 3s, doesn’t mean he can’t knock them down – he was 35 percent last season. He’ll be the main guy in Grimes next season.
2017 Sam Allen, Grinnell (6’3 SG)
Like Moritz, Allen was so good this weekend that we had to write about him twice. It became clear that he may very well be the most skilled shooter in the state. Many of his shots are off-balance, or difficult shots. He creates looks and makes contested 3s. The point is; anyone can hit a standstill J, but Allen makes shots in a variety of ways, and he should be getting some Division I looks.
2017 Sundiata Edwards (5’6 PG)
He’s a shifty point guard who is small enough to find spaces and cracks in the defense that others would not be able to. He’s skilled and makes sharp and crafty passes, and will be able to knock-down a jump-shot when need be. Edwards is the younger brother of former Hoover standout Khalid Edwards, and should be a standout with the ‘Riders next season.
