What was most impressive about Patrick today was his shot-blocking instincts. He came away with more swats than anyone else I saw from any team, and he’s done a nice job using his 6-foot-8 frame to manipulate shots defensively. He’s as good as they come at being patient within the offense, and he never settles for bad shots. His leadership was on full-display too. He’s a stud.
2018 Luke Vaske, 6′ G, Norwalk
I don’t like to throw the word incredible around often, but Vaske was just that in his team’s dismantling of Creston. Some of the five 3s that Vaske hit did not even come close to hitting the rim, nothing but net, and barely even that.
2020 Bowen Born, 5’7 PG, Norwalk
This kid is going to be a special talent for Norwalk. He’s only 5-foot-7, but his skill set is off the charts. He’s a lefty with a pure stroke from deep and is deceivingly athletic which helps him play some tenacious defense. Keep your eye on this incoming freshman.
2019 Arturo Montes, 6’4 F, Grand View Christian
He told me in April that he wanted to work on his perimeter game, and he’s done exactly that. His team picked up a couple of 6-foot-6 post players, so Montes is more free to play around the arc, and he hit several shots from there in his team’s win over Boone. He’s sill a broad-shouldered bull in the paint though too, I love this kid’s game.
2018 Johnathan Herrick, 6’7 SF, Boone
His stroke from deep looked more fluid and pure than it ever has and he broke loose for a transition two-hand slam against Grand View Christian. He’s a versatile and big wing who will generate a lot of Division I and Division II looks this July.
2017 Mhiyu Thomas, 6’4 SF, Roosevelt
Thomas was very good last weekend at Grand View, and even better today against one of the state’s very best, Iowa City West. It’s still unclear what the exact dynamic of this Roosevelt team will be — there’s a lot of new faces — but it seems like the versatile Thomas will be the go-to guy and the best scorer and rebounder.
2018 Seybian Sims, 6’6 F, Iowa City West
He keeps getting better, and there’s no question that he will be a stud power forward for the Trojans next season. He plays confident and uses great length to disrupt defensively and soar to the rim on offense. It’s now official, Sims is a star in 2018.
2018 Matthew Mims, 5’10 PG, Xavier
It’s clear now why North Dakota decided to pull the trigger and offer this somewhat unknown 2018 last March. He’s a special talent, and though he’s not big, he’s smart, skilled, and extraordinarily savvy.
2017 Garrett Franken, 6’7 G, Atlantic
He may be the leading scorer in 3A next season, I’m calling it now. Franken is an extremely tall guard who can score in a variety ways and is a mismatch nightmare for opponents. And for good measure, he has a beautiful rotation on his shot.
2018 Evan Jacobson 5’8 PG, Creston
Jacobson reminded me of a mini Steve Nash out there. He’s got some slick handles, and is always under control. He is a good shooter, though sometimes he forced shots, and should have two very, very good season with the Panthers ahead of him.
