Formally an Ole Miss signee, Coger didn’t meet the Southeastern Conference transfer guidelines that require three semesters at a junior college before being allowed to transfer. He was given his release early last week. had a final list of schools that consisted of Oklahoma State, Charlotte, Kansas State and Rutgers. The 6’9″ small forward only needed one visit as he pledged to 1st year Oklahoma State head coach Brad Underwood early this morning. “As life get tough use it to motivate you to your success”, Coger said after the past whirlwind week.
Originally in the Class of 2013 out of Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh, Coger spent one semester at junior college in Florida then transferred to play under Coach Ryan Motlo at Cape Fear junior college in Wilmington. At Cape Fear CC he averaged 12 points, 8 rebounds and two blocked shots per game. Coach Mantlo had this to say about Tyrek, “I’m thrilled with Ty’s opportunity he’s been blessed with. His hard work and dedication has been rewarded and I can’t wait to follow his success in the Big 12.”
Ranked by ESPN in 2013 as the 64th best center in the country he will have 2 years of eligibility remaining at Oklahoma State. The big man has soft hands, great footwork and a skilled game with his back to the basket. At 240lbs, Coger doesn’t get pushed around in the paint very easily, gets a lot of rebounds and can block some shots at 6’9″.
