Much of the teams success came from its strong Senior play as four of the five leading scorers for the team were Seniors. In addition, Moses Demarbiex led the team in scoring and assists while being second in rebounding. He left big shoes to fill. However, it does not feel as though Centennial has lost a beat as they have had a great summer.
Despite such a younger group, Centennial has played very well this summer. To this point, Centennial is undefeated in the Greenway league. In addition, they went 5-0 as they won the Arizona Christian Team camp tournament. Most recently, they finished 10th in the Summer 64. Total, the team has only lost 2 games this summer despite losing so much of its team from last year.
Trenton Washington 6’4″ SF/PF, has played very strong this summer. Last year, as a Sophomore, he was a strong rebounder with soft hands, a good motor, and great athleticism. Moreover, he has improved his ability to shoot the basketball from mid-range and his ball handling which has afforded him the opportunity to play more along the perimeter.
Koby Jones 6’4″ SF/PF 2018, has also done a tremendous job this year. Jones did not register any statistics on the varsity roster last year. However, his athleticism has given teams fits all summer. He has had a couple of very impressive lob dunks as he runs the floor well, fights for position, and has great leaping abilities.
In addition to Jones and Washington, Centennial possesses some young, talented guards who are good shooters. Their ability to extend the court has assisted greatly in the success of the team and Washington and Jones due to the fact that teams are unable to help and have to guard beyond the three point line.
As far as goals are concerned, Centennial is hoping to take the next step past the sectional tournament. They have made the tournament two times in a row, but they have not made the state tournament. As a team, they are hoping to make it to state and capture a region title.
In order for Centennial to take the next step, the players will have to continue to grow in their confidence at the varsity level as this is a relatively inexperienced varsity team. Moreover, the team needs to improve their strength and quickness. With that said, their depth and talent should carry them quite far. This should be a fun team to watch the rest of the summer and throughout the school year.
