After a stellar junior season with the Wildcats, he’s off to a fast start on the 17U circuit, and he’s seeing plenty of colleges at his grassroots tournaments.
“I’ve seen interest from Kent State and Cleveland State, and my coach is sending my tapes to high D2s, low D1s and schools like that. I’ve been to a Kent State and a Cleveland State camp, and some other D2s want me to go to theirs,” said McKay.
“I feel like Ashland has been to a lot of our tournaments, and Cleveland State too. There’s a lot of schools watching us (All Ohio Black) right now.”
McKay’s agenda for the coming months is to simply work hard and get noticed.
“I just want to get recruited more,” he said. “I know I have to work hard because when July comes up it’s serious, and we’re going to be in a lot of big tournaments – so I just got to go hard.”
After averaging 14.5 points per game last winter as his team’s point guard, he says he’ll be working to improve his shooting and defense this summer.
“I played a lot of point guard for our team last season, we didn’t really have a true point guard, and I was just used to score and get my teammates the ball,” said McKay.
“I make a lot of 3s and I like to get to the basket and dish-out assists. I also take pride in my defense.”
He added: “When I go to the gym I work a lot on my shooting, not just stand-still shooting, but off-the-dribble and stuff like that. I want to improve on my defense more, my offense is always there, but my defense could improve.”
He’ll be spending the remainder of his 17U season with All Ohio Black, and says his role is to rebound from the guard spot, and hit open shots.
“I feel like I need to help our big-men rebound the ball,” said McKay. “And we have a really good point guard on the team, and he will do a good job at getting me the ball for open shots and stuff like that.”
