This summer he’s emerged as one of the best 2019’s in Iowa, period.
The 6-foot-2 guard averaged 13.4 points per game and 6.5 rebounds last season for the Panthers, both team highs. And this summer he’s wrecking shop with Creston’s grassroots team.
Still so young though, Smallwood is mostly undiscovered, aside from one Iowa NAIA program.
“I got one letter from Briar Cliff, just asking about myself and it just said they were starting the recruiting process and they wanted to know more about me,” said Smallwood.
“I haven’t thought about it too much though. I’m hoping I get more mail and stuff but I’m mostly hoping to just improve my game and better myself as a player right now.”
With a full-package skill-set, Smallwood is best at getting to the hoop, but can hit open 3s, dish-out to teammates, and play pesky defense too.
He defined his playing style to PHI.
“I think with me it’s just my driving ability and getting boards and just getting to the rack a lot. I think I need to work on my shooting mostly, just being more consistent and hitting open 3s,” said Smallwood, who said he was expecting to have such a productive freshman season.
“I’m not really surprised, I put in a lot of work in the gym and I think that just helped me a lot last season.”
His goal for this summer? Get him and his teammates some attention.
“Something I’m really hoping to achieve is to just getting our team more attention,” said Smallwood. “And getting people to know who we are.”
