He was strikingly good last weekend at the Kings of the Court Classic in Des Moines, and with great size and attitude could develop into a special player over the next two seasons.
For now, his recruitment is light if anything, and he’s hoping it can start up by the end of the summer.
“I haven’t seen very many coaches come up to me or anything like that. My AAU coach tells me he’s had some coaches ask about me, but I haven’t gotten any direct contact,” said Johnson.
“Hopefully the recruiting process can start later this summer or into next season.”
When talking with the lengthy wing during last weekend’s tournament, he repeatedly mentioned defense as something he takes pride in.
“I’m really just a defensive player. I have a little bit of offense in my game, but I’m mainly focused on defense and getting stops and those hustle plays; getting those loose balls and rebounds and stuff like that,” said Johnson.
“I can shoot it a little bit, I can drive, and I can post up. But my main forte is scoring in the post and getting around the rim, and doing what I can to help my team win.”
Last season as sophomore with the Mustangs, Johnson averaged 4.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and a block per game as the team’s sixth-man.
“I was a hustle player. I was scrappy. I’d get an offensive rebound when we needed it, stuff like that,” said Johnson. “I just tried to help my team as much as a I could getting in the paint, and getting loose balls.”
This spring and summer Johnson is playing with up-and-coming program Tri State Steam. He’s hoping to showcase his defensive skills and generate some interest in the program.
“I’m just hoping to help the team win any way I can, especially on defense,” he said. “And just getting some recognition to the Steam.”
