A strong IQ is definitely a strength of the 6-4 point guard’s as detailed in a recent highlight video in which he can read defenses well to find open shots and create open space.
“My IQ is pretty high. Sometimes we might get out of control, so I need to be an extension of [coach]. So I have to be in control. I have to tell everyone to calm down, ‘let’s get a good one here,’” said Carey.
It is this ‘extension of the coach’ mindset that has garnered Carey two D1 offers to this point both from Howard University and George Mason, alongside interest from multiple other schools including Mount St. Mary’s and James Madison.
Other than his strong understanding of the game, the point guard notes his best strengths on the court are “a pretty good mid-range game” and his “passing ability.
In a pretty successful season in which Frederick Douglass (MD) went 20-2, Carey was able to display his skills and build on them.
“Individually, I was just looking to take on a leadership role this year because next year that’s something I have to do. So I just started early,” said Carey. “I didn’t really focus on scoring because as a point guard, I’m one of those point guards that shares the ball and gets my teammates involved first. But, if I have to score, I will or hit an open shot.”

Now in the summer with District Basketball Club, the point guard has developed even more exposure despite missing the first few tournaments with a stress fracture.
“Last weekend, we played against Trevon Duval, one of the top point guards in the country. I played against him pretty well,” added Carey.
Duval is a tough challenge for a guard fresh off an injury, but it is good news for Carey as he fared well and looks to strengthen as the season moves forward.
Despite his top attributes to this point, he sees room for improvement in two areas moving forward.
“I would say ball-handling; physically getting stronger, I think that contributes to a lot of the success I have on the court,” said Carey.
A few days ago, he also was invited to the Powerade Top 80 All-American Camp coming up later this summer, which provides another place for this guard to shine.
“It’s a pretty good feeling [being invited] because it seemed like no one was looking but now people are finally starting to realize, and when I go there, I hope to show people what I can do to get more opportunities,” said Carey.
Carey is a point guard to watch out for in the upcoming live period where he could attain much more interest and offers. He describes his dream of going D-1 well, from a player that is hard-working and loves the game.
“That’s my dream honestly: to play at a high D-1 level. I like college basketball period. If you get to the NCAA Tournament, anything can really happen. You can be successful as long as you put the work in.”
