Continue ReadingDeer Valley High School looks poised to have a very tough group next season as they started a number of sophomores and had strong JV and FR groups. One of the sophomores that the state needs to be on the lookout for is 5’7″ 2018 Point Guard Deven Breckner.
Breckner certainly has a lot of areas to improve in order to be college ready. Specifically, it would greatly assist him if he were able to add some muscle to his frame and grow a couple of inches. With that said, Breckner possesses an array of skills that make him a potential diamond in the rough for a number of colleges.
Anyone who has not seen Breckner workout needs to contact Coach Jed Dunn and ask to come check out a practice as his work ethic and intensity is second to none. He takes an enormous amount of pride in what he does. His work ethic and smarts alone make him a very intriguing prospect; however, he has plenty more to offer a potential suitor. Breckner shoots the ball from deep at an extremely high level. Also, he has a crafty and great handle that allows him to get from “Point A” to “Point B” as he creates for himself as well as others.
“I’m hungry and eager to prove that I can play this game at the next level,” said Breckner as he acknowledged that his goal for this upcoming season is to “win a state title and hopefully earn a couple of [college] offers.”
As stated earlier, this young man has an appetite that cannot be fixed. He takes advantage of every opportunity that he can to work on his game in an attempt to take his game to the next level. In fact, as far as club basketball is concerned, he stated, “[I want] to play at the highest level.” Breckner is currently playing with Arizona United (AZU) and Team Bayless. He has had one heck of an opportunity to play this game at the highest level as he has played in the Adidas Gauntlet as well as many other premier tournaments.
As it currently stands, Breckner acknowledged that he has received some interest, but has no offers. It is certainly early in the recruitment game for this super talented sophomore, and I would expect the interest level to grow for a number of NCAA Division-II and NAIA Division-I schools.
In addition to his basketball abilities, Breckner has opened the door for himself to a number of schools due to taking care of business in the classroom. He has “about a 3.3 GPA” and has taken 5 honors classes at Deer Valley. It seems quite fitting that a young man who rarely takes the prerogative to do things the easy way would challenge himself and take honors classes.
Keep a close eye on this sophomore who averaged “11 [points per game] and 4 [assists per game]” as he should be in a position to have a breakout season.
