The 2017 prospect was without any interest when we talked with him last winter, and is excited for the opportunity to attend a couple elite camps later this year.
“I’ve gotten two emails of schools that are interested in me; Queens University in Charlotte has invited me to their elite camp. And then another school is Catawba, that’s in North Carolina as well, and they invited me to a camp too. I’m going to do my best to try and go to those camps, just so I can show them how I might be able to fit into their programs,” said Ugochukwu, who says he’s hoping his recruitment continues to gain steam.
“I just feel as though if I keep working on my game, and getting better and getting better with certain parts of my game, and mastering my game, then the recruiting will start flowing in because people will see me as an all-around player and not just a specific player. But if colleges see me as a specific player and that’s what they need for their program, I’ll be OK with that too.”
Ugochukwu says he worked to develop his penetrating ability and he’s evolved into a drive-and-kick type player.
“The main area I progressed was being a better facilitator and getting to the basket. And as I learn that it’s easier to look for my teammates for the kickout, and easy baskets,” he said. “And I’m still trying to work on my ball-handling and my shooting so I can be a better all-around player.”
This spring and summer he will spend his 17U season with Maryland Tar Heels, after playing with Crusader Nation last summer
“Me and my parents thought it would be a better fit for me, and there was certain things going on that we thought the program (Tar Heels) could take me further, and would be better for me in the long run.”
His role with the Tar Heels is just to help the team win in any way possible.
“They really just ask me to be physical, be aggressive, get rebounds, take it to the basket, draw fouls. Just do whatever I can to help out the team, and do it intelligently,” said Ugochukwu.
“My goal is just to help our team win, and beat good teams. That will help us all get further.”
