NORS was actually trailing 55-54 with under five minutes to go but McDonogh 35 2018 G Joe Foucha buried a 3-pointer to give the Stars the lead. After coming up with a stop on the other end, Foucha found Warren Easton 2018 G Damien Tate, who sliced trough the LLI defense for a layup. Tate followed that up with a steal and another lay in on a breakaway and the Stars pulled away from there.
Tate, however, injured his knee in the next game against Elfrid Payton Elite but Foucha and McMain 2018 G Rashaad Jones kept the Stars in the game until the final minutes. Foucha had a huge game on both ends of the floor draining contested 3-pointers while drawing several charges and coming up with a couple of big blocks on defense.
NORS was down by as much as 13 in the second half against EPE but pulled within 60-59 with under a minute to go. EPE got a layup and a few free throws to end the Stars’ day in the semifinals but NORS proved itself to be a worthy challenger.
Foucha and Tate are both Division I level defensive backs on the gridiron and their strength advantage was evident on both offense and defense. Jones also showed the potential to be a good defender on the perimeter but has played the role of scorer more often than not for NORS. He has a wiry frame, a strong handle and was able to knock down shots off the dribble.
Here’s a look at the Rising Stars in their two games against LLI and EPE:
