Battle at the Lakes: Saturday Evening Standouts
2019 PJ Rundquist, 5’9 G, Iowa Mavericks (Wapsie Valley)
Great build but with a big athletic frame, Rundquist was clearly a cut above the rest Saturday evening at Augsburg. He is first and foremost a scorer with a knack for getting buckets, from deep or from blow-by. He’s also active and effective defensively. After averaging 20 points per game as a freshman, he’s on track for a very special high school career.
2019 Jared Kallenbach, 5’10 PG, North Dakota Phenoms (Jamestown)
He was always thinking, and was one-step ahead of the competition, sometimes to a fault. He sees the court very well, and was making some passes that were sometimes so surprising they were hard to handle. His stroke from mid-range is nice, though he looks to set up teammates before he gets his own shots. He’s a savvy guard to keep an eye on.
2019 Chad Morsett, 5’9 G, North Dakota Phenoms (Beulah)
Short in stature but with immense length, it looked like he might have a 6-foot-2 wing span. His stroke is pure and his great length helps him rebound very well from the guard spot.
2019 Nathan Michels, 6’1 G, Iowa Mavericks (Benton)
What was most striking about the Benton product was his offensive rebound and putback in the first half. He’s got some nice reach, and he used it to glide in and swoop o-boards. Michels also displayed an adeptness from deep, and should become a very nice player for the Bobcats over the next three seasons.
2018 Mitch Gehling, 6’4 SF, Iowa Mavericks (Beckman Catholic)
Certainly intriguing with his rangy 6-foot-5 frame, but largely a role player in a pool game against Minnesota Crossfire. But then the final minute happened. With his team down four, Gehling hit a deep and pressure-packed triple, and then with just seconds left he penetrated and banked in a game-winner securing a win for his team. He looks the part, and is clutch too.
2018 Revi Useh, 6’2 G, Minnesota Crossfire (Monticello)
Useh was quiet in the first half, but showcased a nice skill-set in the second. He certainly looks the part, with a decent-sized athletic frame. And he showed a nice jumper from deep and mid-range, and was responsible with the ball under pressure. He was also getting the rim with regularity. It seems he could develop into a real nice prospect.
