As a freshman on a senior-laden team last winter the 5-foot-8 point guard averaged 4.4 points and 1.5 assists per game.
Currently he’s playing up with Iowa Wolves 16U, and though he still has plenty of time for his recruitment to materialize, it could be sooner rather than later when teams take notice.
“The only thing I’ve seen so far is I got a letter to a Grand View camp a couple months back, and I attended that. I talked to their coach a little bit after,” said Turner.
“It’s (recruitment) honestly something I’ve kind of worried about some. I’ve seen a lot of the other freshman getting recognition and all that. But I’m not too worried, I got a couple of years left playing on a great team, and I think Charles (Young) will get me where I need to go.”
With tight handles, plus court-vision and an ability to hit from well beyond the arc, Turner is the full package at point guard.
He explained his style of play in his own words to PHI.
“I think what I do best is just handle the team and handle the ball. And then I’m able to make the right plays and make the right decision on who needs to get the ball,” said Turner.
“I think my biggest strength would be ball-handling, but I use that to get open shots. I do like to be aggressive and shoot a lot.”
After his successful freshman season with the Tigers’ varsity, Turner reflected on his successes and says it was an honor to play with the group.
“It was honestly an honor to play on that team with a bunch of great seniors, and I was grateful to get the minutes that I got,” said Turner. “I think it was a pretty good season, I think I was able to help those guys out a bit.”
Again playing with an older crop of guys this offseason, Turner says his goals are to better prepare himself for the speed of varsity level hoops, and he’d like to improve his defense.
“It’s a lot different than playing at my grade-level, the speed is higher and there’s a lot better competition. Hopefully when I go back to high school ball it will feel more normal than it did last year when I played 14U straight into varsity,” said Turner.
“My defensive game is what I’m really trying to improve,” said Turner. “Try to be a lock-down defender and try to guard the other team’s best guy, and not let him go-off on us.”
