Joseph Thompson is one of the better big men in Louisiana in the class of 2017 and his skill level has improved over the past few seasons. In the open court he’s very comfortable as a ball handler or finding an open shooter. At 6’9 with the ability to stretch the floor both with his jump shot and ability to drive he’s a very tough match-up and it showed as he averaged over 21 points last season.
This summer brings the opportunity to improve both his ball skills and defensive ability. He’s very effective at the power forward position but as he continues to learn to stay low on the defensive end he’ll be able to use his athleticism to defend perimeter players as well. Working with Hellion Knight III “Boog” over the summer is something he feels will help refine those skills.
In the two live periods, he has shown off his ability to drive and play around the rim with a few highlight reel plays. Going forward he wants to show off his perimeter skills even more. At the next level, he wants to compete. Thompson told us, “I love playing the best competition no matter who.” He has offers from Loyola, Richmond, Iowa, UTEP, Tulane, UNO, South Alabama, Illinois and has heard from UAB, Arkansas, Baylor, Cal State Bakersfield, and TCU as well.
Thompson was named to the LSWA Class 5A All-State 2nd team after leading Bonnabel to the 3rd round of the playoffs which included a win over district rival and two time 4A state champion Landry-Walker before losing to Ouachita. He’s open to hearing from anyone in his recruitment and hasn’t begun narrowing his choices down at all. The Bonnabel star who plays his summer ball with Team Beast Mode in the Under Armour Association has a 3.0 GPA with a 20 on the ACT.
