If his 4.3 GPA isn’t impressive enough, check out his 35 he got on the ACT — needless to say, his interest from Ivy League schools and MIT is serious.
“I have some interest from some schools in the Northeast, like Brown in the Ivy League, and also Dartmouth and Yale. And then MIT too; I’m most interested in MIT right now. If I can get into the school they said I could play for them, so I want to go there,” said Kern.
“I’m trying to use my grades to get into college. Right now I have a 4.3 GPA and a 35 on my ACT, so I’m trying to get to one of those schools through that.”
He emerged as one of the top point guards in central Iowa last season while at the helm for a Maroons squad which qualified for the state tournament.
Kern averaged 10.7 points per game, and connected on 56 3s at a 46 percent clip as a starting guard. He also led the team in steals for good measure.
“I was a little surprised at how I played. I remember our first game against Xavier I came off a screen from Ted (Brown) and hit a 3, and it was my first make, and I felt good the rest of the season just to let it fly,” said Kern. “My role on that team was just to be a shooter.”
Now spending his 17U season with a talented All Iowa Attack Black team, Kern says he’ll continue to try and develop his ability to get to the basket — which will make him even more menacing for CIML opponents next season.
“I just like to be in control and help my guys get to where they need to be. I think I’m a pretty good shooter, and this summer I’m going to be working on getting to the hoop,” said Kern. “That will make me a lot harder to guard if teams have to start sagging off.”
