For now, he’s focused on improving his guard skills, and has a host of Division III and Division II programs from near-and-far interested in him.
“I’ve been looking primarily D3; I’ve been talking to Washington University in St. Louis and Bentley University in Boston and then some local colleges like Simpson and Central. I’ve also heard from Stonehill College near Boston which is a D2, so mostly D3 and D2 stuff,” said the 6-foot-1 wing.
“I went to a Washington University prospect camp last summer and I thought that went pretty well. The D3 schools all have to wait for test scores to come in and what not before they can offer anything. So I’m thinking that sometime mid senior season is when I’ll really have a good grip on where I might be heading.”
After starting all season and averaging 7.0 points while connecting on a 44 percent of his 3-point tries, Shafer says it was his guard skills that improved the most last winter.
“I think the one thing I really worked on was my ball-handling ability in the half-court and full-court and that kind of thing. And I think I improved my consistency with my jump-shot, and really developing into an overall guard, that sort of thing,” said Shafer.
“I think I played about how I expected to play. The beginning of the season was tough, we were just trying to figure things out. But I thought I played well, my role was to be efficient and put the ball in the hole as much as I can.”
After playing with All Iowa Attack in year’s past, Shafer will be playing with Pure Prep this summer, where he hopes to continue and sharpen his guard skill-set.
“I wanted to have time throughout the summer to go to camps of the colleges and universities I was interested in,” said Shafer. “As well as be able to gain some more experience at the guard spot.”
