Orient-Macksburg point guard Dylan Nichols is fresh off the heels of an outstanding junior season during which he averaged 22.6 points while leading his team in assists, steals and rebounds.
While most kids of his caliber are making the transition into grassroots ball right now, Nichols is shifting his focus to baseball.
He loves both sports equally right now, and says he’ll let whatever interest and offers he receives determine which he’ll pursue at the next level.
“Growing up I always thought I was better at basketball, and once I got older and I stopped growing I figured out it was a little harder to be better at basketball because there’s so many tall kids. So I think I’m better suited for baseball, but I’m probably better at basketball,” said Nichols.
“I don’t really like one over the other right now, whichever one I get the best offer for is what I’ll do.”
The 5-foot-9 point guard has seen little recruitment yet in either sport, and although he won’t be playing on the 17U grassroots circuit, he’s hoping a monster senior season helped him gain some attention.
“I’m hoping to really get in the gym over the summer and really work at it and have an outstanding senior year,” said Nichols. “ And then maybe the recruitment will come my way, we don’t have the greatest team, so it’s kind of hard to get people to come see you when you’re not really doing so hot. But I think if I really stand out my senior year I can get some people to come look at me.”
Nichols went on to define his playing style to PHI, and what it is he needs to improve on still.
“I like to drive and I like getting to the free-throw line — I’d say that’s my strong suit. I’m a decent shooter, and I like driving and pulling-up,” said Nichols, who will work on some shake-and-bake this summer on his own.
“When other teams play box-and-one I need to be able to shake my defender and get shots off. In between playing baseball I’ll go into the gym and shoot a lot, and I’ll play at the YMCA.”
