Recruiting Report: Craig McGee (2017)
Roger Bacon’s 6-foot point guard Craig McGee has one dream; to use his hoops prowess to go to college for free.
And with some Division I and Division II schools showing some interest in him as he heads into his 17U summer, he’s seemingly on the right track to realizing that dream.
“Currently Cornell University is interested in me, I’ve been talking to one of their assistant coaches for awhile now. Wheeling-Jesuit is interested, Ashland University is interested, there’s a couple other schools, but those are the main ones,” said McGee.
“Ultimately I’m just trying to get offers and looks, my main goal is to get exposure at camps and to get recruited and get an offer — that’s all I want, is to get an offer so I can get to school for free.”
McGee says one school in particular is showing considerable interest.
“Cornell is the school that has reached out the most,” said McGee. “I got a chance to play in front of them and their coaches say they like my game, and I’ll text and talk on the phone with them a lot.”
A cerebral floor general who takes pride in finishing at the rim, McGee defined his style of play in his own words to PHO.
“First of all I’m a very heady guard, I may not be the flashiest person, but I can get the job done. A strength of mine is driving to the basket and finishing creatively, with contact or without contact and creating around it. I was the assists leader on my high school team and my AAU team, so I like getting teammates involved,” said McGee.
“Defensively I consider myself a lockdown defender, I take the challenge of guarding the other team’s best player whether it’s a point guard or a small forward. And that’s really me in a nutshell.”
The ambidextrous point guard is spending his 17U season with Shining Stars, and again reiterated that his goal is to get an offer.
“My role with that team is to play lockdown defense and to get my teammates involved. Also to have a nice balance between scoring and assisting,” said McGee.
“And also I’d like to pick up some offers, preferably D1, but D2 would be fine. Before my summer is over I just want to have some offers.”
