Both Cameron Dantzler and Edward Cooper, the Falcons’ top two players, were defensive backs on that seminal squad and found their basketball legs about midway through the season. Dantzler’s name might be a bit familiar as the 6-foot-3, 170-pound guard is actually headed to Mississippi State on a football scholarship but 2016 wing Edward Cooper is still looking for a home at the next level on the hardwood.
Cooper has a good frame at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds and is a solid athlete who can elevate above the rim. His best attribute, however, is his passing, as Cooper is constantly looking to set his teammates up for easy shots. It sometimes gets him into trouble passing into tight spaces but he does show a knack for seeing guys before they flash open.
Cooper is still working to improve his shooting and ball handling but is a smart player who can also contribute on defense. He hasn’t received much college interest and would likely be best suited to play off the ball at the Division II or NAIA level with a couple years of experience.
Here’s a look at what Cooper did in wins over Amite, 58-50, on February 8 and district foe St. Helena, 70-55, February 5. He finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals against the Warriors and 15 points with 11 rebounds, two assists and one steal versus St. Helena.
