Continue ReadingAfter a sensational freshman season playing with a very good Des Moines North squad, point guard Tyreke Locure landed in Iowa’s 2019 rankings as the fourth-ranked player in the class.
Though he’s just a freshman, Division I schools are starting to inquire about the 5-foot-9 showstopper, and he hopes he can pick up some offers this spring and summer.
“I haven’t heard from coaches directly, but I’m told that University of Nebraska-Omaha is interested, and South Dakota State. I went on a visit there (SDSU) with (Kingdom Hoops program director) John Lamb and (Des Moines North teammate) Jal (Bijiek). I’ve been in touch with Jeff Horner (North Dakota), he came to see Jal and was impressed with me. I’ve heard some rumors about other schools, but I’m not all about that yet,” said Locure.
“Also Drake came and watched when we played Valley and I know John has been talking to them about me.”
Locure was among the best point guards in the state this season regardless of class, even leading the state in steals and assists.
“My role was just to find a way to get my guys the ball, and to get them shots. I’d say my strong suit is pushing the ball and creating in the open floor. Something I struggle with and I’ll improve over the summer is my pull up, when I get that down I’ll be harder to guard,” said Locure.
“Coming into the season my goal was to lead the state in assists, I set that goal with Coach (Chad) Ryan and my other teammates. I was happy that I did because I know there are a lot of other really good guards in the state, like Turner Scott from Valley and some others.”
Though it should be his 15U season this summer, Loure will play up with Kingdom Hoops’ 16U Elite squad.
“I hope I can pick up some offers. But right now my development while playing with the older team is what I’m focused on,” said Locure. “I’m also focused on my school and my grades so I won’t have to worry about that. But I do hope to pick up some offers, or at least some strong interest.”
