“He is a solid DIII guy,” said Lakota West Head Coach Matt Rooks. “He has a lot of DIII interest. Otterbein (OH) is in it. Capital is in it. Those are some of his favorite one’s.”
The Otterbein Cardinals and Head Coach Brian Oilar 4-21 in his first season at the helm. The young Cardinals do return 83.5% of their scoring next year though.
Webber could elect to walk-on with a DI program, but situations like that take a lot of massaging.
“His dad (Cliff) went to Liberty,” said Coach Rooks. “He would love to walk-on at Liberty, but that is DI though. I think Mitch wants to go play.”
Barring the Liberty route, Webber will likely select between Otterbein and Capital unless new options emerge in the next month.
“Those are the two big one’s for him,” said Coach Rooks. “He is going to be DIII. Hanover (IN) expressed a little bit of interest.”
Otterbein and Capital sent coaches to evaluate this winter.
“They all like him,” said Coach Rooks. “They told him they really want him.”
The Game of Mitch Webber
As a integral part of the Lakota West Firebird season (15-9, 12-4), Webber tugged down 4.4 rebounds per game. He knocked down 24 three-pointers in 24 starts.
Standing 6-foot-5, Webber can open up the floor or attack the glass. His versatility adds value to his game. In college Webber projects as a wing, with occasional low block opportunities. He has feet good enough to slash and finish in traffic.
Mitch Webber is a very upright player for a wing, but he changes directions well. His motor is strong, and winning, not shining is a priority. Look for Webber to improve his outside shot even more at the next level.
Webber’s best shooting night was January 15th, when he scored 18 points (6-12 FG, 2-5 3’s) against the Hamilton Big Blue. Webber and Lakota West won with strong rebounding and defense.
For the Lakota West senior, the college decision looms.
