A 5-foot-11 point guard, Johnson put up solid numbers as the team’s starting lead guard, and some area Division III and NAIA schools have taken notice.
“I’ve been getting a lot of texts from the Central coach. And then I get a lot of letters from Briar Cliff and Albion, and then Albion sends me emails a lot to. And also Luther has sent some mail, and I’ve gotten a couple letters from Elon.”
Johnson will once again play with Martin Brothers this season, alongside Waukee teammate Jacob Rau.
“We definitely need to win a lot more games than we did last year. And I’m just really looking forward to improving my game, that’s what the spring and summer time is for,” said Johnson.
“I’m looking forward to showcase my skills, we’re going a lot of places. I hope that a lot of coaches can see me and start recruiting me.”
Johnson averaged 11.6 points for the Warriors this season and shot 40 percent from beyond the arc. He mentioned shooting as his best strength.
“I think my main strength would be shooting, I shoot it pretty well from deep, and I have a decent mid-range game. So that would definitely be my main strength I would say,” said Johnson.
“I definitely am going to continue to work on my ball-handling and making one-on-one moves on somebody. So definitely creating my own shot I would say.”
He went on to reflect on his junior season, which recently wrapped up after a substate semifinal loss to Ames.
“We played really well as a team I thought this year. I had to score the ball for us to be successful, but also just setting up my other teammates to get their shots,” said Johnson. “We had four guys in double-figures so we moved the ball pretty well.”
