When we last checked in with Shakopee senior Booker Coplin, he was on a tour of southern and western D2/D3 schools. After returning and weighing his options, he is still considering the farther schools, but he’s also thinking he may want to stay midwest.
“I decided they are a little far,” Coplin said of the schools he visited on his trip, “but I’m still considering them as options.”
Midwest programs are understandably pursuing the shooter.
“I’m still looking at a few MIAC schools and have visited UW-River Falls as well as Upper Iowa. Schools that are contacting me that I may visit are Jamestown, Viterbo, and Lake Forest in Chicago. I will most likely decide after the season.”
Coplin of course joins Steffon Mitchell as well as fellow senior grinder Taylor Tripplett. If Mitchell continues to boost his production and guys like Coplin complement him appropriately, they’ve got a good shot at making a deep playoff run.
“We have a lot of returning guys and a lot of seniors with experience. The new section has a lot of good teams and we’re going to have to prepare well. I’ve been working on everything of course, but also trying to spend a lot of time in the weight room.”

When we reached out to 2016 SG Booker Coplin of Shakopee, we actually connected during a west-coast college tour. He was cruising to D2 schools Point Loma Nazarene and UC-San Diego for their prospect camps.
“Hopefully after this trip and my visits this summer there’s one college that stands out as the right fit,” Coplin said. “I was also contacted by St. Olaf, UM-Duluth, Viterbo, and most of the MIAC schools.”
Prior to visiting the west coast schools, Booker spent some time in Louisiana visiting family and going to the LSU camp. His trip is about a month long, and he said that his options are completely open at this point.
“I’m looking for a fun and cool campus and surrounding area, educational programs that I would be interested in, and a coaching staff that I like and will work well with,” Coplin said.
Coplin describes his own strengths as ball handling, court awareness, and shooting. It sounds like he’ll join Minnesota Basketball Academy (MBA) when he gets back from his trip.
I played a few tourneys with MN Expo, and I had fun because it was all Shakopee guys, and we did alright,” Coplin said. “Now I’m playing with MBA and I’ve played in one tourney… we went 5-1 and lost to only D1 Minnesota, who won the tourney.”
