Williamsburg’s 6-foot-4 power forward is instead saying he’ll forgo what would have been his second-to-last offseason with the Barnstormers, and instead will focus on football.
“Last year was my last year with them (Barnstormers). I don’t know if I’m going to play AAU. I probably won’t. Basketball isn’t my favorite sport anymore, and I’m looking to go to college to play football,” said the tight end and defensive end.
“If I get an offer some place for basketball, I would still consider it, but football is definitely my concentration right now. I’m going to go to some (football) camps this summer and hopefully pick up some interest.”
Even with his heart set on football, Subbert was able to post some decent numbers during his sophomore season with the Raiders.
He explained to PHI where it is he thought he excelled this season on the hardwood, and what areas he’ll need to improve.
“I’d probably say playing near the rim is where I’m best, like 15-feet-and-in is probably where I’m best at. And I’m a little shaky on the 3, but if I’m open, I’ll take it,” said Subbert, who mentioned two areas he’d like to see improvement.
“Definitely shooting, and ball-handling.”
After Williamsburg graduated a slew of seniors from last year’s state qualifying team, Subbert was thrust into a much larger role this season.
He ended his sophomore campaign with averages of 8.3 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.
“I played OK, I definitely could have played a little better,” said Subbert.
“I was definitely expected to be the main scorer and best player. I was expected to do quite a bit, and obviously the season didn’t go as good as we wanted it to.”
