This is a team that spreads the floor, whips the ball around the floor in controlled, rapid way, and then pounce the second they saw a lagging defender fall behind in space. Red Wing without a doubt ran one of the most controlled halfcourt motions I’ve seen all season and for the most part they refuse to take a bad shot. This isn’t an overly athletic team but they are one of the smartest and most skilled teams anywhere in the state.
There isn’t much to say about the game as the final outcome never seemed in doubt. Northfield had a couple runs here and there but Red Wing seemed to counter every punch. Fans seemed to be more worried about getting in line for ice cream and discussing Class AAA state tournament seedings in the second half while keeping an eye on the latest 40 second possession picking the Raiders apart.
Top Player Prospects of the Night.
- Travis Toivonen. The future UND hoopster scored at all the right times. He opened the game with three quick scores, he hit a three in the second half that countered a Northfield trey that brought their crowd to its feet, and Travis worked the high low perfectly with his teammates. Travis was the guy on the floor with the best combination of toughness and athletic ability. Scored 26.
- Joe Sevlie. This is a 6-foot-7 big that you would call mechanical in a good way. Love how he uses his pivot with strong elbows out, love his call for the ball, and I love how he won’t take a bad shot but has all the confidence to take shots in space. Put up 16 points that included a trey, free throws with a nice touch, and a strong power move inside well placed off the glass.
- Tanner Ernste. Tanner moved around screens and attacked with a sharp cut into lanes beating the rotating Wingers to the rim for a couple And1s. He scored at the arc, made a pull-up, and was one of the Red Wing players with the confidence to make plays. I think he would be a really nice player at the UMAC level or a guy that goes into a MIAC, plays JV, and then fights for time later in his career.
- Ben Munson. Maybe one of the most efficient 14 point nights you will see. Did not take many shots but made good on nearly every chance he had. Munson is a 6-foot-1 wing that makes good decisions and never forces anything. Perfect for what they do, unselfish.
- Hunter Koep. His team lost but Hunter is a fighter. Busting through screens, fighting for boards, you name it, Koep cares about winning and you have to love a guy who likes the fight.
- Mason Otterdahl. About 6-foot-7, strong well built, and you can see that the sophomore’s feel is starting to come around. Has a chance for a bright future when the timing comes.
