Dontre English was terrorizing the Huskies early on, and scored 15 of his game-high 31 points in the first 9 minutes of game action. But he could not sustain, and Hoover’s evenly spread talent across the floor was too much in the third and fourth and quarter.
Quinn was amazing in the second half, connecting on all 14 of his free throw attempts, and scoring all 22 of his points in the third and fourth quarters. Douglas Wilson scored all 14 of his points in the first half, including two impressive jams.
Y. Quinn is now 14-14 from the line, and has 22 points — all in the 2H. Incredible #iahsbkb

North is still a very dangerous team with state tournament aspirations, but it’s clear that Hoover wants to do more than just make it to Wells Fargo Arena next month, they want to cut down the nets.

Hoover Player Evaluations
2019 Kenny Quinn, 5’9 G
Plan and simple, the younger of the Quinn brothers is the team’s defensive stopper, and he’s very good at playing his role. His right hand is always extended into his opponent’s face, and his lateral movement and strength are top-notch. He does more with his 5’9 frame then most anybody else would be capable of. Offensively he makes nice, crisp, accurate passes, but doesn’t look to score. For now, he is what he is, and then’s a shut-down defender.
2017 Al Campbell, 6’2 G
Campbell is the X-factor for this Hoover team, and he’s able to beat you with his shot, or by attacking the rim. He has a nice-sized frame, and plays with composure. He’s a very nice fit into the Hoover system (transferred from Waterloo East), and looks to be a solid NAIA or Division III prospect right now.
2016 Y’Vez Quinn, 5’10 PG
The kid can absolutely take over a game, I saw him do it with All Iowa Attack last summer, and he did it again tonight. He does it with elite speed, top-notch handles, and — as evidenced by his 14-14 free throw shooting — very good shooting. He’s small, but could definitely play point guard at the NAIA level, maybe Division II. Take a look at him.
2017 Douglas Wilson, 6’6 PF
He just keeps getting bigger, more athletic, and more skilled. We identified Wilson as a top prospect in the 2017 class very early on, and he’s exceeded our high expectations of what he might become. He soars and glides towards the rim, and is seeing some early Division I attention. Already a top 10 guy in the class (No.9), he should see some D1 offers come his way this spring and summer.
North Player Evaluations
2017 Jal Bijiek, 6’7 SF
It just was not his night, one of those games where there seemed to be a lid on the rim. As always he was effective on the glass, and defensively blocking shots. But Hoover forward Nate Lee did a very nice job on him defensively and he could get no easy looks. We still think he’s deserving of that No. 4 ranking in 2017. His shot is starting to look like a real shooter’s stroke should, and the elevation he gets on his jumper will make it impossible to block. If possible, he needs to add some weight this offseason, and then he could become unstoppable.
2016 Dontre English, 6’2 G
Sometimes English gets that look in his eye where you know he’s going to try and takeover a game, and he had that look tonight. He was astonishingly good in the first half, shooting early and often, and connecting more often than not – pouring in 17 first half points. In the second half the Hoover D tightened up, and he wasn’t able to get the ball in the hoop as much. He can hit the 3-ball (five of them tonight), and he seems to will, and power his way to the hoop when he wants. JuCos and NAIAs should be targeting this fiery two-way player.
2016 Ben Hayes, 6’4 F
Hayes is a NAIA or Division III candidate who will bring unselfish play and an all-around game. He’s done an amazing job at developing his 3-point shot, and is stout defensively. He sometimes gets lost in the shuffle of this supremely talented team, but is always good.
2019 Tyreke Locure, 5’9 PG
Tonight was not the young phenom’s best game, but still he was extremely effective. He’s sneaky defensively, the reason he leads the state in steals, and can change the game with his shooting and passing ability. His handles are elite, and his basketball IQ is high. His only disadvantage is his stature, at 5’9 it’s tough at times to get clean looks around the rim. He still finds plenty of ways to score, and could develop into an sub-6′ D1 point guard. But if he grows to 6-foot, he’s a sure D1 point guard.
