“Basically I just felt it was time for a transition, I wasn’t basically feeling the program over at (Waterloo) East, and I thought at Columbus I could really make an impact with the guys there” said Sales. “I also had some friends there. And it was more than basketball, it was an academic move too.”
The 5-foot-6 point guard played with B.A.M. last summer during his 16U grassroots season, he’ll spread the love this summer.
“This year I expect to play with a couple of teams,” he said. “I don’t know which teams yet.”
He’s yet to see his recruitment really start-up yet, but has received one letter in the mail, and hopes to generate plenty of buzz over the next six months.
“I got a questionnaire from South Dakota, and I’m going through the process of getting myself set up with some recruiting services and stuff like that right now,” said Sales.
“It’s been on my mind lately. I’m just hoping to cash in some offers, and I’m just hoping to get some colleges to recognize my talents and my love for the game. The main goal is to just get to college for a free education.”
A student of the game, Sales says his main priorities are to make his teammates better, and to work hard.
“I like to study the game, so therefore I like to pick my teammates up a lot. I just study it, and then exhibit my talents from working so hard,” said Sales, who defined his playing style.
“I would say right now shooting is a strength, it used to be that teams would sag off me, but I worked really hard last summer on my shot.”
After missing the first part of the season because of transfer rules, Sales is averaging 22 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists per game with the Sailors.
“This year my role has been way different than at East,” he said. “I’m a junior now, so I’m just trying to lead the guys. They’re not from as much of a winning tradition, but I try to push them each day in practice, and just make them better as much as I can.”
