The St. Mary’s (Storm Lake) junior has positioned himself among the state’s best producing guards in the 2017 class, and while averaging 24.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game is quietly having an all-state caliber season.
The 6-foot-2 shooting guard has been playing his offseason ball with Iowa Extreme for five years, and plans to play with them this spring and summer for his 17U season.
He’s already receiving some initial NAIA and Division III interest, and should receive some additional attention this summer after the season he’s putting together now.
“I’ve had Briar Cliff contact me a few times, and then the Buena Vista coach talked to me on a visit,” said Demers. “And I’ve heard a little bit from Northwestern College too. Not that much so far.”
He visited Buena Vista because his mom works there. And he says his focus right now is on winning games, rather than his recruitment.
“Right now I’m just focused on getting Ws for our team, and then I’m just hoping I get my name out there a little bit this summer,” said Demers, who defined his playing style to PHI.
“I’m able to shoot outside if we need it, but I’m more comfortable driving to the hole and just taking it up strong. I’m not really a post-up guy, but I can still take it down low.”
He added: “I’ve been working on my ball-handling, I need to be stronger with the ball when I drive.”
Despite his individual successes this season, his team is just 6-9. Demers says his job is to keep his guys motivated to win.
“I really step-up when my team needs it. We’re struggling a little bit, so I just find ways to get us pumped up,” he said. “I’d like to make it pretty far in the postseason, and it’d be nice to get recognized by some colleges.”
