Continue ReadingCedar Rapids Washington center Laveechie Williams has burst onto the scene this season as one of the state’s most productive big men.
The 6-foot-5 post is one of just three guys in 4A to average a double-double (Van Rees, Douglas Wilson), and he’s sparked the interest of a couple area JuCos because of it.
“Ellsworth has come and watched me play, Kirkwood has shown some interest and they came to watch me play. That’s it for now,” said Williams.
“The Ellsworth coach talked to me about my game on the court, and told me I need to work on my ball-handling and stuff like that.”
“I didn’t talk to the Kirkwood coach, he just came to watch me play. But my coach has talked to him.”
The high-energy center said he’d relish the opportunity to play at the JuCo level.
“I would like to play JuCo, it would give me more time to develop into the game more,” said Williams, who defined his playing style to PHI.
“My strengths are I’m very active on the court, and have a lot of energy. I’m best when I’m in the post rebounding,” he said.
“I’m working on my ball-handling, that needs to improve. My coach makes all of us do ball-handling drills in practice, we’ll bring out some cones and do some ball-handling drills.”
Though his team is struggling a bit, Williams has shined, averaging 13.6 points, and 10.7 rebounds per game this season.
“They just need me to bring some energy, so I bring that every night. I just play hard,” he said. “I think I’ve been playing good. I’ve been rebounding and scoring well.”
