It’s the award given annually to the state’s top senior as judged by the Iowa Newspaper Association. It’s a solid group of seniors this year that make it an interesting race. The way we see it, though, is that there are three frontrunners for the award, which of course can change as the lights get brighter and the stage gets bigger as we get deeper into the postseason.
That trio is three Iowa Hawkeye commits in Jordan Bohannon, Ryan Kriener and Cordell Pemsl, who also happen to be our top-three ranked 2016s, though not in that order. Right now, I’m giving the edge to Bohannon thanks in large part to how close he is to the 50-40-90 club despite the how much he has to carry the Lions offense. He’s attempted 355 shots, over 100 more than his next teammate. And he’s done it without sacrificing efficiency.
This will be a fluid race, and I’m not yet willing to totally rule out the rest of this list, but look for the top of the postseason awards to have a Hawkeye flavor.
