Iowa City West
Despite their three losses (Apple Valley, Maple Grove, Wahlert), we still consider the Trojans favorites to win a 4A title. They are currently in the midst of their longest winning streak of the season, seven games – including a 102 point outburst last Friday night against Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Tuesday, West will look to extend their streak to eight — and seek revenge from a Jan. 12th loss — when they host Dubuque,Wahlert.
Harlan
Always a power in 3A, the Cyclones are hitting their stride at the right time, winners of five straight. The five wins were against some tough competition, including Kuemper, Atlantic, and Glenwood – those three have a combined record of 39-14. Nebraska-Kearney commit Kyle Juhl has been tremendous all season, with averages of 17.4 points, and 10.9 rebounds per game.
Cascade, Western Dubuque
The Cougars started the season with a seven game win streak, before losing to Northeast, Goose Lake. That has been their only loss of the season to date, and they’ve followed it with a 10 game win streak. They have three regular season games against three very good teams – including a rematch against the Rebels on Tuesday. We’ll soon see how good Devin Green and Cougars really are.
MOC-Floyd Valley
Top 10 2016 Levi Jansen has been relatively quiet this season for the Dutchmen, but has still been tremendous, averaging 17.4 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game. He, along with small forward Christian Korver have their team flying high – winners of eight straight. They have two more regular season games before embarking on what they hope is a lengthy post-season journey.
Monticello
After a middling 4-4 start to the season, the Panthers have won 11 of 12, and are currently riding a six game win streak – their longest of the season. Senior wing Derek Manternach recently rose in our 2016 rankings, he’s having an outstanding season, averaging 18.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.3 steals per game.
Down
Cedar Rapids Prairie
They were 4-1 and looking great, then they fell to 6-6, and now – losers of five straight – the wheels have officially fallen off. And it doesn’t get any easier, their final three regular season games are against Linn-Mar, Iowa City West, and Cedar Falls – ouch.
Davenport North
They had won three straight games, including a very nice triumph over 4A defending champs North Scott, but then things went sour. The Wildcats have now lost six straight since their mini win-streak. they’ll try and get back in the win column on Tuesday night against Clinton.
Winfield-Mt.Union
All things considered, it’s been a very nice season for the Wolves. But they’ve hit somewhat of a snag in the last week, losers of three straight after a 12-5 start to the season. The three losses against Lone Tree, Louisa-Muscatine, and Iowa Mennonite.
Hampton-Dumont
The schedule has been brutal during the Bulldogs’ current six game losing streak. But their last four have been especially ugly, dropping the games by an average of 23 points. They have four more regular season games to try and work out the kinks before post-season play begins.
Red Oak
Known more for tennis than basketball, the Tigers have really been struggling of late on the hardwood. They’ve dropped seven straight – against a brutal schedule – and have fallen to 5-14 on the season.
