Lutcher jumped out to an early 19-9 lead behind a stout defense and attacking the rim. As teams settled into the games, the shots started falling. It was back and forth until a late stretch in the 4th of missed shots that allowed DLS to get on the break and get open looks to give them the 71-62 victory. Below are reports on some of the key contributors.
Lutcher
Brendon Taylor (6’1 PG, 2016) led the way with 20 points and showed off his ability to finish inside and out while leading the team. When he fouled out late in the 4th, Lutcher lost their leader. Jaylon Wingate (6’0 SG, 2016) got hot for a little stretch but wasn’t consistent in this game. Still finished with 13 points and 3 made threes. He’s capable of hitting 5+ in any game.
The only other player in double digits was junior 6’3 forward Tariq Belvin who scored 11 and gave them solid inside / out play. Football star Jontre Kirklin (6’1 F, 2017) couldn’t get going with foul trouble but showed off his athleticism in attacking the glass.
De La Salle
The story of the night was Troy Nisby (6’1 G, 2017) and his shooting display. Of the 15 made threes for both teams, seven belonged to Nisby who finished with a game high 22 points. Senior guard Steve Kelly was being defended in a box and one the majority of his time on the court but found a way to get loose at times for 12 points and two huge made three’s in the 4th quarter.
Big man David Williams (6’7 F, 2017) struggled with foul trouble throughout but still managed 12 points and numerous big rebounds and defensive plays while occupying defenders to free Nisby. Junior guard Dashawn Wright struggled with his shot all night but finished with 7 points and provided the hustle plays DLS needed to pull this one out.
