And though he has seen his share of D3 interest, it’s for his prowess on the diamond, not the hardwood.
“Baseball has been my main sport, and since it’s in the summer I never really got out to play AAU basketball, I never really considered basketball as a college sport,” said Edwards. “But if I could get some scholarships for basketball, I would definitely consider it.”
Edwards batted .333 as a starting middle-infielder for the Railsplitters last summer, and is among the CIML’s leading scorers this season for basketball.
It would behoove any area programs to take a look at the 6-foot-1 shooting guard – he’d listen.
“I have not seen any interest for basketball from any coaches, but for baseball pretty much just D3, like Wartburg, and Coe want me to come and play middle-infield for them next year,” he said.
“It comes down to the money basically, but I wouldn’t mind playing baseball or basketball in college.”
The talented athlete says he’s the leader of the Rails this season, and that’s plain to see when watching them play.
“I’d say first I’m a good leader on the court, and I make myself and my teammates better. I have full trust in my teammates and they trust me,” said Edwards. “And my best skill is my shooting, I’m just able to get my shot off with a defender in my face. And when they have to come close out I can drive by them and get to the rim well and draw fouls.”
He went on to describe his specific role with the Rails this season.
“Last season we had Jelani (Hughes), and I kind of took a backseat to him, so it wasn’t a great year for me, said Edwards. “This year I’m more of the leader and I take the most shots. My teammates look to me to score, and play hard defense, and just play hard all the time – that’s pretty much my role on the team.”
