A South Dakota Attack product in the offseason, Hilbrands has been sensational this winter for LeMars, and his recruitment is starting to ramp-up, of the Division II variety.
“University of Sioux Falls has been contacting me a lot, I’m hoping they’re getting close to offering. And Southwest Minnesota State has been keeping in contact with me quite a bit lately. And Northwest Missouri State has sent me a couple letters, and I’ve been getting a lot of stuff from Briar Cliff and other NAIA schools,” said Hilbrands, who says he hopes some Division I schools get involved this summer.
“Right now it’s just D2 and NAIA stuff, hopefully some Division I schools start to get involved, that would be pretty cool. I’m hoping to finish this year strong, and hopefully start getting even more interest, and we’ll see what this summer has to offer and see if anything comes up there.”
The 6-foot-1 point guard is averaging 25.2 points per game on 58 percent shooting so far this season. He’s also leading the Bulldogs averaging 4.2 assists, and 8.2 rebounds per game.
He explained to PHI where he’s seen the most improvement in his game over the last six months. And what he’ll continue to work on this winter.
“Finishing with both hands around the hoop is where I’ve improved most,” he said. “I’ve always been able to get to the hoop, but I had always struggled finishing with both hands.”
Hilbrands added: “I need to continue to work on my shooting, and especially my pull-up jump shot and shooting it off the dribble from 10-15 feet.”
After transferring into LeMars last season as a sophomore and playing as more of a role player on a state qualifying team, there’s no question that he is the captain of the ship this season for the Bulldogs.
“This year’s different, last year we had a lot of seniors, and this year I have to really take over the scoring role, and I think I’ve done a good job of that so far,” said Hilbrands. “And hopefully it starts resulting in more wins.”
