The 6-foot-4 junior has shed 40 pounds since then, and he has emerged as one of 2017’s superstars this season for an 11-1 Chariton squad.
A Kingdom Hoops product, Chuol is averaging 11.8 points and 11.5 rebounds per game this season, while also leading his team in assists with 5.1 per game. Still though, his recent surge has not yet garnered any college recruitment.
“Last summer didn’t help very much with recruitment because I tacked on a whole bunch of weight, but I’m looking forward to this summer and the rest of this high school season for it to help out with my recruitment,” said Chuol, who is eager to showcase his new body, and skill this summer with Kingdom Hoops Elite.
“I think I became a lot better passer this year, so if I can play on the wing this summer I’ll be able to show that off, and I just need to make sure I don’t turn the ball over and when I need to score I’ll score. I’ll just play my role just like I do in high school.”
The 2017 stock-riser – our most recent Player of the Week winner – recently strung together three triple-doubles in a row. It’s a feat he can directly attribute to his recent weight loss.
“I was pretty big last year and so I lost about 40 pounds, and so I got faster and it helped me to get up off the ground better, and so that helped my game out a lot,” said Chuol. “I’m able to handle the ball better, jump higher, grab boards, and make sure nobody gets second chance buckets against our team.”
Chuol added: “I’m a really good playmaker, my eyes are always looking around, and so if one of my teammates is open and they’re not being guarded I’ll spot them wherever they are on the court. And I’m taller so I can look over defenders and it helps me find my guys for open shots.”
With his Chariton Chargers off to a 11-1 start, all is good for Chuol right now, and he plays his role with the team to perfection – consequently, he’ll always be a triple-double threat.
“I think I’m playing really good right now, I’m doing what I need to do for the team. I know my role with this team, I don’t go out there and try and do things I don’t need to,” said Chuol. “If my coach needs me to go out there and get 10 assists, and 10 rebounds then I’ll do that, sometimes I’ll need to score, and I’ll do that too. ”
