He started the season coming off the bench for the Indians, but has since nabbed a starting spot, and has led the team in scoring on more than one occasion – a rare feat for a freshman at any level, let alone in 4A.
The talented prospect is one of 30 freshman to be included on our 2019 Watch List, and will once again spend his offseason with All Iowa Attack Nike this coming spring and summer, where he hopes his recruitment will start.
“Nope, nothing yet (recruitment),” said Gauger. “My dad tells me a lot about that though, that it doesn’t happen a lot when you’re as young as I am. I’m really, really eager to get back out there with Attack again, and hopefully I can pick up some recruitment.”
In the meantime, Gauger will continue to hone his skills as a freshman starting in the CIML.
“I guess my best thing would be defense really, getting steals, I think I’m leading my team right now in steals. And then probably shooting 3s, I’m pretty good from there,” he said.
“I can always continue to work on defense, and then limiting my turnovers is something I’m working on. I’ve been turning the ball over quite a bit.”
Gauger – who is averaging 5.7 points per game, and shooting 52 percent from beyond the arc – says he’d always thought he might play varsity as a freshman, but he’s a bit surprised he was able to put himself in a position to start.
“I always thought I would play on varsity (as a freshman), but I never knew I would start – so that’s kind of been a surprise for me. But I figured I would at least play for varsity,” he said.
“They just expect me to do the same thing as everyone else; just to go out there and play hard, give effort, and play the best that I can.”
