“It sets an example of toughness and willingness to work,” Wright said. “My body is still kind of banged up from football season, but in terms of basketball, I still felt good right away. I came out of the gate pretty hard.”
Wright, a transfer this season from Shaker Heights, is one of the top unsigned local seniors out there in both basketball and football. He loves both sports and would play either on college even though he’s viewed a little more as a football prospect.
“It’s tough with how well I’m playing in basketball,” Wright said. “It’s a really tough decision.”
Wright, who plays receiver in football, is a 6-foot-3 guard. With his new school, he’s started the season off with a bang. He’s the team’s second-leading scorer and has boasted big games against big teams, including a 23-point night against Medina.
Known mostly for his outside shot, Wright has done more this season to create his own shot off the dribble. That’s partly because he has some new faces around him.
“I’m contributing more than I did last year, and I have to make more happen for myself,” Wright said. “In the past I had Esa [Ahmad] and Rosel [Hurley], and they made it easier for me.”
Euclid has struggled to find wins against an unforgiving schedule this season, and as one of the team’s leaders, Wright is hoping to help his team find answers before its too late.
“I think we’re going through some ups and downs because its a new staff and new team, and we don’t have the chemistry yet,” Wright said. “We’ve had a few big wins, and we’re making good progress each week.”
Despite his strong play, Wright has not received much interest to play basketball from colleges. He believes partly because he doesn’t play AAU basketball, and the window to see him play is much smaller than other players. Also, as a two-sport athlete, he’s never fully devoted himself to the game of basketball.
For those who have not seen him on the hardwood, Wright has a message about his game.
“I’m a hard worker player that is coachable and willing to learn,” Wright said. “I’ll also bring toughness and a great heart, as well as hustle and leadership.”
